Empathy is an essential leadership trait because it allows leaders to truly understand, connect with, and support the people they serve. When students and staff feel heard, supported and valued, they’re more likely to work hard and strive for the best. With mental health challenges on the rise, showing empathy—especially toward students—is critical for building trust, resolving conflicts, and fostering meaningful relationships. It also helps create a more inclusive environment by embracing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
I bring a deep sense of empathy to my work with students, rooted in my own experiences. My time in school was often difficult—I was frequently bullied by peers and, at times, staff. I never quite felt like I fit in, and I now understand that undiagnosed ADHD, depression, and anxiety played a significant role in that. The teachers who had the greatest impact on me were those who listened, believed in me, and offered encouragement. Their empathy changed my life, and I hope to bring that same compassion and understanding to every student I serve.
As a school board member, I would strive to show empathy towards staff and students alike. I want every person in our district to feel they can reach out to me and be heard. I know I don’t have all the answers, but I am willing to listen and see what I can do from my position. In doing this, I hope to help rebuild trust in this district so we can retain quality educators which only enhances the student experience.
